Hi Rebecca, thanks so much for your comments! Yes, indeed, the Writer of the Story is in charge over all people and things. That Frodo was overcome, good as he was, shows there are things beyond the strength of mortal wills to resist forever. Any addict will tell you the same thing. He may think he was a failure for not resisting the irresistible, but we know the truth, don’t we? 🙂

When I first read The Lord of the Rings at age 12, the power of the Ring over Frodo’s will totally freaked me out–it bothered me far more than the Orcs or Ringwraiths, or the violence of the war (it was the most violent fiction I’d read at that point). That experience is at least part of the reason I’m extremely bothered by propaganda, mind-control, and brainwashing.
However, re-reading The Lord of the Rings as an adult, I saw that a greater Power overruled the power of the Ring, even when it had overcome Frodo. This reminder me that the real world, too, has a God Who is greater than men who violate the minds of others. I’ve found this idea that Tolkien did not consider Frodo’s failure to be moral failure extremely interesting. ]]>

Hi Derrick, thanks so much for your kind words! It’s fascinating to read Tolkien’s earlier thoughts and his Letters about this subject as well. Tolkien is clear in one of those letters that Frodo’s failure to destroy the Ring was not a moral failure but being overwhelmed by the power of the Ring. Frodo himself thinks he failed morally and he freely chose evil, but I hope he learned the truth in the West. I am glad this post gave you the opportunity to look at Frodo’s actions here in a new light! I am at work on a book about the journeys of Bilbo and Frodo, so quite agree with you about the power of Tolkien’s writing and sub-creations.

Hi Ryan, thanks for your thoughts! Indeed the Ring was too much for Frodo – or anyone – at this point to resist. Anyone else would have fallen prey much sooner. But Frodo is still a great hero for doing what he said he would do and suffering terribly to do it – “I will take the Ring” and he did! Lucky you to watch ROTK – that cake is too cute! 🙂 Just began to read Fellowship last night.
